What Are the Pros and Cons of Taking a River Cruise?

Many first-time river cruisers expect their experience to be similar to taking an ocean cruise, especially when it comes to the time spent in port. They think that a river cruise is the same as an ocean cruise but on a smaller ship. In reality, river cruises invite more exploration with ships docking closer to the heart of the city.

River cruises offer a more intimate, small-group feel, more time in port, and convenient docking near city centers. This is especially appealing on the Danube and Rhine, where travelers can explore historic cities, charming towns, and cultural landmarks without the long transfers often associated with ocean cruise ports.

While cruising the Danube, after a morning city tour in Vienna, we stayed in the city and enjoyed Wiener Schnitzel at a local café. This is a great example of the freedom river cruising can provide: guided sightseeing when you want structure, followed by independent time to linger and enjoy the destination more personally.

However, first-time river cruisers should know cabins are typically smaller than ocean cruise cabins. Another surprise is ship stacking, where another river ship may dock directly beside yours, temporarily blocking the view from your cabin or balcony.

Unlike ocean crusing where you can be the only ship you can see for miles, river cruises take place on busy rivers that serve as important transporation hubs and can have traffic. During one river cruise, the ship was delayed for hours in a “traffic jam” at a river lock.

Here is a lock on the Danube. As you can see, it's often a smooth transition.

River cruising is smooth and well-organized, but the atmosphere is still shaped by river conditions, lock schedules, and navigation logistics. We have videos on our YouTube channel which show what it looks like when ships go through locks or dock directly beside yours. It's all part of the journey when on a river cruise.

Danube and Rhine river cruises are especially well suited for travelers visiting Europe for the first time or those who want a relaxing vacation where the major details are handled for them.

When we help you to plan your first river cruise, we will learn about your travel style, the level of luxury you expect on your cruise, and what types of excursions would interest you. All of these details and many more will shape your experience on a river cruise. Our expertise will help you find the river cruise that is perfect for you.

River cruising is a unique, immersive way to travel Europe. It allows more time in each port and the convenience of docking near city centers, while ocean cruise ports are often farther from the cities themselves and may allow less time to explore.
