Matild Palace in Budapest, Hungary

Updated: May 14

In 1902, with the imminent opening of the Elisabeth Bridge linking the Buda and Pest sides of the Danube River, Her Imperial and Royal Highness Maria Klotild of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha commissioned architects to build two mirroring palaces at the gateway of the Elisabeth bridge.

These English Baroque palaces, known as the Klotild palaces, were stunning showcases of Hungarian masterpieces and welcomed visitors to the 'pest' side of Budapest.

Located inside the palace was The Belvárosi Kávéház cafe, where artists, writers and locals gathered for inspiration and conversation.

After years of neglect following damage during World War 1 and World War 2, one of these buildings has been meticulously restored into Matild Palace, the city’s first Luxury Collection hotel.

This restoration and preservation effort worked to keep much of the historical grandeur while adding modern, luxury amenities.
